African Dwarf Frog (Hymenochirus boettgeri)

African Dwarf Frog (Hymenochirus boettgeri)

Remarks: African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) are a small species of aquatic frog. They are primarily nocturnal but you will usually see them hovering around the tank during daylight hours. They do have lungs, so you will notice them dart to the surface to gulp fresh oxygen before returning deeper. For this reason, they should be kept in aquariums 12" deep or shallower to allow them easy access to the surface. They prefer calmer waters and can be sensitive to loud noises.

Being social, these frogs should be kept in groups of 3 or more. If one has a small colony of both males and females, sometimes they can be heard "singing" to one another in a song that sounds similar to a cricket. African dwarf frogs can become rather personable over time and learn that humans mean food, coming up to the front of the glass to beg when people are near. They do best in a species only tank as they will swallow small fish and any too large to swallow are highly likely to harass the frogs.
